Magee’s Bakery – All You Need To Know

o

Magee’s has been family owned since 1956, which means they’ve been cooking up goodies for more than 60 years, so you know they’ve perfected their recipe by now. While they are a teensy bit on the pricey side, their portion sizes are worth it, as is the flavor.

Let’s say you’ve got the sweetest of sweet teeth. What does Magee’s have for you? How about their chocolate frosting that’s almost sickly sweet? Or a cream horn that may be the best in the state?
But what are you going to eat for breakfast, since you’ve got dessert covered? How about their scrumptious breakfast sandwiches and their freshly squeezed orange juice?

One thing is for sure: there are too many must-try options at Magee’s to try them all in one visit. Their donuts are something to rave about, and when they are freshly glazed, your mouth will water just looking at them. Or sink your teeth into a buttery croissant, paired with eggs that are perfectly made to order.

Best of all? If you truly don’t feel like getting in the car to go get a scrumptious anything from Magee’s, you can order online. Talk about sweet.

Corbo’s Bakery

69204_533951653315581_1626188996_n

Before you ever get inside, Corbo’s lets you know that you’ll be eating Italian sweets, with a sign on their door with the infamous Godfather reference, “Leave the gun, take the cannoli.” And take the cannoli (and everything else) is what you’ll want to do once you get inside. Among the must-tries at Corbo’s are the stuffed cannolis, cassata cakes, donuts, and biscotti. You can’t go wrong with any order. Don’t feel like getting something specific? You can grab something from their wall of $3 “odds and ends” and find yourself lucky with no matter your choice: biscotti, cookies, to-go cakes — you name it. It’s a great go-to for any last minute dessert choices for a get together.

While there isn’t anywhere to sit inside, making it more of an order + go ordeal, anything you get is good to eat right then, or to keep in the fridge to share with the whole family (if you can keep from eating it all until dinnertime.) If you want something a little fancier, this Little Italy institution can also make a cake for any occasion, even a beautifully tiered wedding cake with icing flowers that look too real to eat.

Corner Bakery Cafe

258s-4

If you’ve ever worked an office job and they’ve had catering, there is a good chance you’ve had Corner Bakery Cafe’s goods before. They’re known for their scrumptious, office-sized catering portions, but they are also great for solo take-out goodies or treats to eat in. They have branches all across the United States, but this location in Elk Grove is spacious, serves breakfast all day (hello, pancakes for lunch!) and has a good selection of entrees as well as baked goods.

If you go in for a healthy lunch instead, try the spinach salad with the strawberry dressing and the gluten free bacon, lettuce, and tomato wrap. It’s a way to treat your taste buds without too big of a treat. Plus, it falls in the category of a “Pick 2” — Corner Bakery’s deal for $7.99 that lets you pick a half sandwich and a salad, with a bonus of chips and a pickle. If you’re looking for something to satisfy that sweet tooth, try one of their cookies: they’ve got flavors like chocolate chip, English toffee, oatmeal raisin, a plain sugar cookie that is anything but plain, a “Monster” cookie that is stuffed with so many M&M’s you’ll be saying Mmmm with every bite.

Ellie’s Bakery – All You Need To Know

258s-13
9.1Total Score

Say Bonjour to delicious delights at Ellie’s. Order something savory — like their egg and tomato jam breakfast sandwich on a homemade English muffin — or something sweet, like their coffee cake or brownies. Plus, you can pair your food (sweet or savory) with a spicy mocha with a housemade vanilla marshmallow, or a macchiato. Your taste buds will thank you for giving them such a flavor combination to experience.

But if you’re at Ellie’s, chances are it’s because you heard about their macarons. Their signature collection includes flavors like pistachio, chocolate & peanut butter, and lemon lavender, but they also have seasonal flavors. For example, the October selection is spooky sweet, with flavors like grape hazelnut, caramel corn, and spiced pear. Every month, the flavors change, so you have an excuse to go in every four weeks – you have to try them all!

If you’ve never had a macaron before, here’s a quick rundown of how Ellie’s make theirs: in-between two french-meringue-style cookies of almond flour, egg whites, and sugar, there is a filling of ganache or jam. But Ellie’s gets creative, and has used a variety of ingredients to make fillings, from Guinness Stout to Mem Tea to the simply classic salted caramel. Hurry in now to try the only $2 macarons.

Plehn’s Bakery

258s-11
9.2Total Score

When you go into Plehn’s each day, be ready for a surprise. Because the items are made from scratch daily, the inventory for that day depends on the baker’s preference. But you can rest assured that every day, they will have their staple items: coffee cake and kuchens, danishes, donuts, in-house-made brown sugar ham, soups, iced cookies for any occasion (gradation, Halloween, the Kentucky Derby, Easter, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, a baby shower) and tried-and-true flavors of their regular cookies: oatmeal, chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, old fashioned sugar, and ice box/thumbprint cookies, which change color seasonally.

They have a variety of seasonal items, in fact. Whether it’s Irish Soda Bread for March 17th, a brownie haunted house for October 31st, a cake shaped like a turkey for Turkey Day, or a Kringle cake with cheese, cinnamon or pecan for the holiday season, you can bring something sweet to the party for any celebration. Or, if you want something colder, try an ice cream cake or a “Cupid’s Delight,” a combo of meringue, ice cream, and whipped icing. And if you trust Plehn’s enough to handle your wedding cake, you can stand tall and proud beside their tiered perfection. But don’t forget the groom’s cake! Serve the groomsmen a baseball park, guitar, or golf bag made out of icing and dough.

Scenic Route Bakery- All You Need To Know

You’ve heard about taking the scenic route home on a road trip, but now get ready to take your taste buds on the trip of a lifetime with goodies from the Scenic Route Bakery. Once you step into the spacious yet minimalist store, and warm up with a hot spiced cider called “Under the Weather,” or a coffee with honey undertones called “Honey Bee.” The staff there is gracious, and if you get so excited by how good everything tastes and accidentally spill your coffee, you’ve got a pretty good chance that they will offer you a new one.

Get a lunch sandwich with a named like “The Barbara,” or “The Sheriff,” or even “The Nancy,” to go with your pour-over coffee or an almond croissant. Or pair your espresso with a spinach and feta croissant, or with their desserts: a nutella bread pudding or a vanilla creme brûlée. If you’re ordering for the office, be sure to bring back their scones, muffins, cinnamon or pecan sticky rolls, or their quiches. With so many options and such a kind staff, you’ll be coming by again and again — as directly as possible — to revisit the Scenic Route.

Carlo’s Bakery Dallas TX

258s

After gaining fame from the Cake Boss TV show, Carlo’s Bakery has spread across the United States. This Carlo’s branch offers delivery with Postmates, so you can get their goodies without going to the bakery! Because it’s namebrand, be prepared to spend a little extra, and because Dallas is pretty far from the original Hoboken, they don’t carry all the Italian goodies that they might at other branches. That being said, they do have lobster tails (in salted caramel, yum!), cannolis caked with powdered sugar, cookies, and cakes, and much more, so there are definitely treats to treat you and your family to.

They also do seasonal goods, like pumpkin cream cheese stuffed donuts. Make every meal sweet — donuts for breakfast, lobster tails for lunch, and wedding cake for dinner and dessert! Plus, if you’re a big Cake Boss fan, you can get show-inspired t-shirts, hats, mugs, and more at the bakery, to go with your goodies. They offer a variety of flavors for all of their baked goods and scrumptious delights, so be sure to come back again and again to try them all. And the set up of the bakery will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop, so you’ll want to come back again and again.

Arsicault Bakery – All You Need To Know

Arsicault Bakery – All You Need To Know

Though Arsicault Bakery only opened in 2015, Arsicault has already accumulated a decent number of awards. For example, they’ve been listed on SF.Eater as having both “pastries that define San Francisco” and “killer croissants,” so you know when you step into Arsicault, you’re stepping into something good.

They’ve got chocolate tarts (large or individual, if you don’t feel like sharing), morning buns that are so perfectly powdered they look fake, Valrhona Chocolate Chip Cookies, French raisin rolls, a ham and onion confit quiche, apple galettes (made with their homemade puff pastry dough), Kouign Amann and raspberry pailles, and more.

Their hours are a bit limited so be sure to hurry in when you can for some treats. In fact, their stuff is so good, they have to put a limit on how many one person can buy because otherwise you might buy out the whole shop! This authentic French bakery’s pastries look as good as they taste, with very Instagrammable croissants, full of flaky layers. But make your picture quick so you can bite into the treats!
